Dr. Ziwen Pan is currently an associate researcher (permant position) at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). His research interests mainly include the development of detection technologies related to accelerator-based, cosmic-ray, and laser-driven muon sources, as well as their interdisciplinary applications.

He has participated in the construction of MELODY, China’s first pulsed muon source, where he was responsible for the design and construction of its muon spin spectrometer endstation. He also contributed to the development of MuST, China’s first continuous-wave muon source, leading the R&D of the detection system for its muon spin spectrometer.

He has independently developed novel imaging and detection techniques for muon-induced X-ray elemental analysis, as well as muon-tomography methods and interdisciplinary applications using cosmic-ray and accelerator muons. Together with collaborators, he completed the world’s first proof-of-principle experiment on muon generation via ultra-short ultra-intense pulsed lasers—the third type of muon source—on the basis of which he is promoting research on mobile and tabletop muon applications.
