Xuebiao Yao is a Chair Professor at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), Director of the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for Membraneless Organelles and Cellular Dynamics, and Director of the Division of Biomolecular Condensates at the Hefei National Research Center for Physical Sciences at the Microscale. He serves as Vice President of the Chinese Society for Cell Biology and Secretary General of the Asia-Pacific Organization for Cell Biology. He is also a member of the scientific advisory boards of Keystone Symposia and EMBO Press, Editor-in-Chief of Cell Biology International, and Associate Editor of Bio-X Research, an AAAS journal. His honors include the Giannini Scholar Award and the American Society for Cell Biology’s David Burgess Award. He has been elected a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association.

Yao lab investigate fundamental questions in multicellular organisms, with a focus on quality control in cell renewal and the molecular codes of cell communication. We have established a research program in cell division dynamics, identified proteins that regulate centromere function in higher eukaryotes and uncovered the evolutionary mechanisms underlying this regulation. Our study has also revealed how the material properties of biomolecular condensates contribute to chromosome compartmentalization in higher eukaryotic cells, and elucidated mechanisms that shape the collective plasticity of gastrointestinal epithelial cells. In recent years, our lab has used gastric organoids to investigate the crosstalk and coordination between the cell cycle and physiological rhythms.
