Professor Chen CAI received his PhD degree from The University of Queensland (Australia) in 2017. He joined the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering at the University of Science and Technology of China and establish the Laboratory for Environmental Bioprocess and Biotransformation (LEBB) in 2021. His research interests lie in microbial processes mediating carbon and nitrogen conversion, particularly anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). He published a series of papers in prestigious journals such as The ISME Journal, Energy & Environmental Science, Environmental Science & Technology (Letters), and Water Research as the first/corresponding author. He has also received academic honors such as the Best Paper Award from The ISME Journal and the Dean's Award for Outstanding Research Higher Degree Theses from The University of Queensland.
LEBB focuses on novel microbial processes that have a significant impact on global climate change. By discovering and elucidating those microbial processes, we aim to improve our understanding of the biogeochemical cycle network and to facilitate research on biotranforamtion of greenhouse gases. This will help us to understand the impact of microorganisms on greenhouse gas mitigation in natural and anthropogenic ecosystems and support the development of carbon-neutral biotechnologies. The laboratory's current research directions include (not limited to):
(1) Novel microbial carbon and nitrogen cycling processes;
(2) Ecological effects of microorganisms on greenhouse gas emissions;
(3) Microbial mechanisms of and biotechnologies for greenhouse gas mitigation.
