Introduction
Taichi is a type of traditional Chinese martial arts. Today, Taichi is more like a kind of fitness training. Since Taichi concentrates on relieving the physical effects of stress on the body and mind, it has become increasingly popular in the 21st century with over 100 million players all over the world [1]. Taichi is usually practiced in groups and guided by an expert face to face. In the future, Taichi is in fact very suitable to be taught in a virtual immersive environment with similar experience but without requiring a large physical space. This is our motivation to develop our immersive Taichi learning system, called “ImmerTai", co-designed with Taichi experts. ImmerTai can work in various environments including immersive CAVE, HMD and ordinary PC. For more details, please refer to our work [2].
Public Taichi Motion Dataset
During the research and development of this work, we have constructed a Taichi motion dataset. We are making this dataset available to the research community free of charge. If you use this dataset in your research, we kindly ask that you reference our work [2]. You can download the publicly available release of the dataset by clicking THIS link. Please fill THIS FORM and the password will be sent to you.
Dataset Description
We publish our Taichi motion dataset recorded using a Kinect sensor. This dataset will be continuingly updated while the development of this work.
In our experiment, we selected 8 fundamental Taichi motion patterns for recording as shown in the table below. The combination of these patterns can lead to more complicated Taichi patterns. For each pattern, there is a Taichi expert’s motion and a demonstration video recorded. Meanwhile, there are students’ motions recorded for each pattern in the dataset.
List of Taichi motion patterns.
