The structural basis of synaptic transmission and plasticity in physiology and pathology
The process of synaptic transmission serves as the fundamental basis for all complex neural processes. Through neuroactivity, synaptic strength can be altered, a phenomenon known as synaptic plasticity, which serves as the cellular foundation for learning and memory. The intricate and specialized structures of synapses are crucial for their unique functions, as even slight modifications in their composition or arrangement due to genetic mutations or environmental influences can result in severe neurological disorders and diseases.
Our research employs advanced imaging techniques, including STORM and MINFLUX superresolution microscopy, in conjunction with electrophysiology, molecular biology, and computational modeling, to investigate how the synaptic functions are dependent on the precise organization of key proteins at the nanometer scale. These studies enable us to unravel the underlying mechanisms of various diseases, with the ultimate goal of identifying novel therapeutic interventions and gaining a deeper understanding of their treatment.
