Cell division is fundamental to the growth, development, and renewal of multicellular organisms. Yao lab investigates the spatiotemporal organization and regulation of key events during cell division, as well as the mechanisms that detect and respond to mitotic errors. Their work aims to understand how cells maintain accurate renewal and tissue homeostasis. The lab has established a research program in mitotic dynamics and studies proteins that regulate centromere function in higher eukaryotes, including the evolutionary mechanisms associated with these proteins. This research helps explain how cells ensure the faithful transmission of genetic material and how defects in mitosis may affect tissue function and contribute to disease.
