Gastrointestinal Epithelial Plasticity and Physiological Rhythms
Gastrointestinal epithelial cells must continually renew themselves while adapting to changes in their tissue environment and physiological state. Professor Yao’s team studies the plasticity of gastrointestinal epithelial cell collectives and the mechanisms that regulate it, focusing on how cells communicate and coordinate their responses at the tissue level. In recent years, the team has used gastric organoids to investigate the crosstalk and coordination between the cell cycle and physiological rhythms. This work seeks to clarify how biological processes operating on different timescales shape epithelial renewal and multicellularity, and to advance understanding of how gastrointestinal tissues maintain homeostasis while adapting to change.
