Jinhui Xu is currently a Chair Professor of Information Science and Technology at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). He obtained his BS and MS degrees from USTC and his PhD degree from the University of Notre Dame. He was on the faculty of Computer Science and Engineering at the State University of New York at Buffalo for 25 years and served as the department chair before joining his alma mater in March 2025.
Dr. Xu's research centers around Algorithms and Computational Geometry and encompasses several other areas such as Machine Learning, Differential Privacy, Networking, Biomedicine, and AI-driven Drug Discovery. He has designed optimal algorithms for a number of fundamental problems in these areas and settled quite a few longstanding open problems such as constrained clustering, truth discovery, min-cost multi-covering, and earth mover distance. He initiated and developed the theory of joint influence which has found important applications in several domains, including Geometry Enhanced Deep Learning. He pioneered the research of using geometric techniques to solve key problems in biomedicine. Particularly, his research on determining the spatial patterns of genetic materials inside the cell nucleus has received internationally acclaimed recognitions. Multiple papers were selected as the cover story and lead article of major biological journals. His work on the topology of chromosomes has been recommended by Faculty 1000 as an article of special significance to its field.
So far, Dr. Xu has published 280 high quality papers. Many of them appeared in top venues such as STOC, FOCS, SODA, ICALP, SoCG, ESA, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ICCV, IPMI, ISMB, SICOMP, TIT, JCSS, J. Alg., Algorithmica, JMLR, TKDD, ToN, JSAC, TMC, TMI, Science Advances, Bioinform., HMG, PLoS Comp. Bio., etc.
Dr. Xu has trained several fine-quality PhD students. Several of them are on the faculty of world renowned universities such as University of Pennslyavania, University of Wisconsin Madison, University of Science and Technology and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. Others have achieved significant accomplishments in the industrial sector.
