Profile

Liyao Lyu is a Specially Appointed Professor in the School of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science at the University of Science and Technology of China.

He received his Ph.D. in Computational Mathematics, Science, and Engineering from Michigan State University in 2025 under the supervision of Professor Huan Lei. From 2025 to 2026, he was a Hedrick Assistant Adjunct Professor in the UCLA Department of Mathematics, working with Professors Andrea L. Bertozzi and Hayden Schaeffer.

He received his B.S. in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics from Soochow University in July 2020, where he worked with Professor Jingrun Chen on computational chemistry and machine learning. He also participated in the UC Berkeley Extension Program and conducted research visits at HKUST and UMass Dartmouth.

His research interests include machine-learning methods for multiscale modeling, scientific machine learning and numerical algorithms, and consensus-based gradient-free optimization and sampling. Specific topics include coarse-grained molecular dynamics, Mori–Zwanzig methods, generalized Langevin dynamics, mixed residual methods, deep-learning-based discontinuous Galerkin methods, and stochastic optimal control.
