Su Zheng is an Associate Research Fellow, Assistant to the Director, Research Group Leader and Innovation Officer in the Department of Orthopaedics. His research focuses primarily on bone infections and immunology. He obtained his PhD from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2019 under the supervision of Professor Tian Xingyou. During his PhD, he spent a year as a visiting scholar at Queen's University Belfast in the UK. He completed his postdoctoral training under the supervision of Director Zhu Chen and Professor Wang Yucai, after which he was promoted to Associate Research Fellow at the First Affiliated Hospital of the University of Science and Technology of China in 2022. With over 12 years of research experience, his work focuses on four key areas: 1) the prevention and treatment of periprosthetic bone infections, 2) elucidating bacterial biofilm structures, 3) developing biofilm-based organ-on-a-chip systems, and 4) creating portable infection detection devices. The laboratory is interested in advancing research aimed at elucidating these complex interactions with a view to refining treatment strategies for managing infections and immune-mediated diseases and promoting public health security. This includes analysing the structural characteristics of bacterial biofilms, understanding pathogen-induced immune mechanisms, optimising immunomodulatory adjuvants, addressing chronic infections, advancing personalised medicine, strengthening public health strategies, developing antimicrobial test strips and using AI for disease prediction and treatment.
As the first author, he has published fifteen SCI papers in renowned international academic journals such as Science Advances, Drug Resistance Updates, Nature Communications and Coordination Chemistry Reviews. As the corresponding author, he has published fourteen SCI papers in renowned international academic journals such as Nature Communications, Coordination Chemistry Reviews, Cell Reports Physical Science, ACS Nano, Biomaterials (two papers), Research, Advanced Functional Materials (two papers), Bioactive Materials (two papers), Cell Biomaterials, Nano Today and Journal of Visualized Experiments. He is a National Committee Member of the Geriatric Bone and Joint Diseases Branch of the Chinese Geriatric Health Care Medical Research Association and a Committee Member of the Bone and Joint Branch of the Chinese Geriatric Health Care Association. He is also the Deputy Head of the Basic Research Group of the Orthopaedics Branch of the Anhui Medical Association. He has been selected as a reviewer for Science Bulletin (Q1, General), Journal of Orthopaedic Translation (Q1, Medicine), Infectious Medicine and Burns & Trauma (Q1, Medicine), and has reviewed manuscripts for SCI journals including Nature Communications, eBioMedicine, Bioactive Materials, International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, Advanced Materials, ACS Nano, ACS Applied & Interface Materials, Advanced Science, Composites Part B and Carbohydrate Polymers.
He has led projects including the General Programme and the Youth Programme of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the General Programme of the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, a Key Research and Development Project of the Anhui Provincial Department of Education, an Anhui Provincial Health and Wellness Research Project, the New Medicine Cultivation Project at the University of Science and Technology of China, and the Cultivation Project of the Institute of Pioneering Medicine and Frontier Technologies at the Hefei Comprehensive National Science Centre. He has also participated in the Key Research and Development Programme of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the General Projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Anhui Provincial Key Research and Development Programme, the Anhui Provincial Key Programme for Clinical Translation, the Key Project for New Medicine at the University of Science and Technology of China, and the Pioneer Programme of the Institute of Health and Wellness.
